1 King’s Bench Walk is exceptionally proud, and delighted, to congratulate Baroness Hale of Richmond, upon her appointment as the new President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom.
After being called to the Bar, and a distinguished career in academia, Lady Hale became the first woman to be appointed to the Law Commission in 1984, and was appointed Queens Counsel in 1989. Upon her return to the Bar, Lady Hale became a member of chambers at 1KBW in 1994 before being appointed to the High Court Bench later the same year. In 1999, she was promoted to the Court of Appeal, and was appointed as the first female Lord of Appeal in Ordinary in 2004. She later became the first and, until recently, only female Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, and was appointed Deputy President in 2013. She will assume the office of President in October following Lord Neuberger’s retirement.
Lady Hale was the principal architect of the Children Act 1989 and has played a key role in the development of family law over past thirty years. Her judgments in all areas of law are rightly regarded around the world as a model of clarity and reason.
We send our warmest congratulations to Lady Hale upon this historic appointment, and wish her much happiness in her new role. A dinner will be held in her honour in due course.
